SUNY Canton began competing at the collegiate level in the Spring of 2018 in Overwatch, Hearthstone and League of Legends. The college has a vibrant gaming community with academic programs including Game Design and Development, Graphic and Multimedia Design, Cybersecurity and Technological Communication. There is a large gaming club on campus, and the college plans on adding a gaming-themed wing in the residence halls, which will house one of two high-tech gaming rooms.
The College was originally chartered in 1906 as the first postsecondary, two-year college in New York. In 1987, the State University of New York’s Board of Trustees authorized the college's present designation as State University of New York College of Technology at Canton, more commonly known as SUNY Canton.
